Docking Clinic (ASA certification not applicable)

Course Objective

Upon successful completion of this three hour course, students demonstrate a dramatic increase in their enjoyment of sailing because they no longer harbor anxiety about docking at the end of the day.  In addition, your sailing partner will enjoy fine tuning these skills because it helps them to become more proficient and confident crew.  There is no ASA certification applicable to this course.

Course Overview

Parking your large boat in a seemingly tiny slip can be challenging, even for experienced sailors.  Docking is an important skill for a sailor, just like learning to take-off and land an airplane if you’re a pilot. To dock competently (and without injury or property damage) requires an understanding of the forces that act on a boat, how you can control them, and lots of practice.

This course allows students to practice repetitive docking and casting-off maneuvers to reinforce understanding of theory, methods and skills.  You will learn skills for docking when strong currents and tricky crosswinds are present, when mooring, or when or tight, close-quarters maneuvering is required.  Both novice and experienced sailors will benefit from this course as the techniques apply to inboard single-screw cruising yachts in the 27 to 50 foot range.
