Family Course - ASA 103:  Basic Coastal Cruising Certification

Course Objective

Enjoy a memorable bonding experience with your family!  You will spend 3 days sailing together on the water.  Our licensed captain will be on the boat as your guide, but everyone will be learning while you sail the boat.  After these 3 days of instruction on the water, you should be able to skipper your boat safely outside the harbor, along the coast, day or night, in moderate winds less than 15 knots. 

Course Overview

  • Night sailing
  • Heavy weather sailing and docking, weather permitting
  • Crew overboard outside the harbor
  • Anchoring outside the harbor on a lee shore
  • Reefing and heaving to
  • More knots
  • More info on the Yanmar Diesel Engine and backing into a slip
  • Autopilot, Chart plotter, GPS and VHF instruction

Prerequisite

  • ASA 101

Tuition

  • Tuition includes ASA certification for two members over 18 years of age. 
  • Additional ASA certifications for persons over age 18:  $100.00 p/person
  • ASA certification for persons under age 18 is not available; however, a certificate of completion will be awarded to your junior crew members. 

Scheduling

You work with the instructor to schedule the days and times that will be best for your family.  Sessions are once a week for 3 weeks, but can be three days in a row if you choose.  Class times are scheduled in four hour blocks, typically from 1pm to 5pm, but you may schedule them earlier or later if needed.
