Gennaker/Cruising Spinnaker Clinic (ASA certification not applicable)

a

Course Objective

After this class you will be able to fly the gennaker on a cruising sailboat.   This skill is particularly advantageous for sailing back to the mainland from Catalina Island and for sailing downwind (e.g., Newport Beach to Dana Point, CA).  Jibing the gennaker in particular, is one of the more challenging techniques of sailboat racing and you will be able to use this skill in races such as the world famous Newport to Ensenada race held each April.  There is no ASA certification for this course.

Course Overview

Learn the art of flying a cruising spinnaker, also known as a "gennaker." (Gennaker is a cross between a genoa and spinnaker).  Each of our sailing yachts is equipped with a cruising spinnaker.  In this class, you will learn how to:

  • rig the gennaker
  • raise the halyard
  • set the sail
  • trim the sail
  • race downwind
  • jibe the gennaker
